  • Introduction

The mission of the CFM Computing Service (CS) is twofold:

    1. Provide and/or help in the provision of all computing services necessary in the day-to-day activity of the CFM staff. This includes purchase of hardware and software, desktop equipments, management of internet access, email accounts, wifi networks, etc.

    2. Provide help in the installation, maintenance and performance of computing tools devoted to scientific computing.

Being the CFM a joint center it belongs to both the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC) and to the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Specifically all the communication services and infrastructures are provided by the UPV. Depending on the kind of service sometimes the users have to deal directly with the University Computing Service. Anyway we can always guide you through the process and indicate you the best way to proceed in every case.

Also take some time and go around the UPV/EHU IT services page to see what the University offers to their users.

    Software

    General information

The CFM Computing Service (CS) itself does not have any budget assigned to aqquire new software for general use of the center. However the center belongs to both the CSIC and the UPV/EHU, and each institution has its own corporate agreements with some software developers (eg. Microsoft) and general licenses for certain software. You can find a list of such agreements/licenses (and instructions on how to get the software) in the links below. Also the CS provides advice and support about some free software which can be of interest in general and also specifically in a scientific enviroment. Check the links!

    CSIC corporate software

The CSIC has a list of both general purpose and scientific computing software. In order to obtain this software you need to be associated to the center and to be able to access the CSIC intranet at https://intranet.csic.es. If you don't know your user/password for the intranet please contact the CFM Administration Service.

Once in the CSIC intranet you should look for "Servicios -> Servicios TIC -> Gestor de peticiones" in the left menu. A new tab or window with the "Gestor de peticiones" (request manager) webpage will open. There you can select between general, GIS and scientific software section in which you can select the software you want from the droopdown list. After your request is aproved, which will happen either instanlty or after one or two working days (depending on the software), a download link to the requested software and installing instructions will be provided to you. All this process can be followed from the request page ("mis peticiones"), but you will also be notified by email as the process goes on.

Most of the times the download link refers to an iso image of the software. You can mount the image into a virtual DVD drive and install the software with no need to burn it down into a physical DVD. You can find instructions about how to do it in the following guide.

    UPV/EHU corporate software

By the moment the CFM-CS has no access to the UPV/EHU corporate software (check the software page). This situation may change, but by if you are interested of any of this software you should phone or email to the UPV/EHU helpdesk - CAU (Centro de Atencion al Usuario).

UPV/EHU has also subscribed with Microsoft the Microsoft MSDN Academic Alliance (MSDAAA) for Technical Studies corporate agreement. This agreement allows to use Microsoft Software on labs, personal and classroom computers, both for students and research staff at the UPV/EHU, while not being used for commercial purposes. You can find more information about how to access this service at the UPV/EHU MSDNAA information page.

    Other recommended sofwtare

We provide you with a list of other free sofwtare which we think it could be useful in your daily general and scientific work.

    Support

    Requesting Support

The optimal way to receive support is sending an email to the Computing Service general email . All the CS staff reads this email so use it instead the staff personal email. Also avoid using the telephone except in really urgent cases as it severely disrupts our working flow.

You can also request for help to the UPV/EHU helpdesk - CAU (Centro de Atencion al Usuario) as, regarding the IT services, we are integrated in the University as any other of its Faculties or Centers. Anyway, when in doubt, try to contact the CFM Computing Service staff first and we will guide yo through the best way to proceed.

    Remote desktop support

In order to solve simple problems such as certain configuration or installation issues we can remotely access to your desktop whithout having to physically go to your office. In order to do this you have to initiate the conection using the following software (don't forget to arrange this beforehand with the CS staff):
