CSIC awards the prizes of the XII edition of Inspiraciencia
- The event took place at the Residence for Researchers.
- The event included theatrical performances by the InCiTe company.
The Inspiraciencia short story contest closed last Friday, September 9, with an on-site gala at the Residencia de Investigadores, in Barcelona, with the award ceremony and a theatrical performance prepared for the event. The event was broadcast live and will be available in the coming days on the Residence’s channel. The CFM has been collaborating for years with this initiative by judging the stories in Basque and disseminating the contest.
Among the 24 prizes awarded, there is a majority female presence (17 women, two thirds of the total number of finalists and winners). In the case of the Artificial Intelligence Award, 6 of the 7 winners are women. Up to 455 stories from all over Spain and Latin America have been submitted to the contest.
Institutional prizes are awarded to a winner and a finalist for each category (adult and young) and language (Spanish, Catalan, Galician and Basque).
There were also two public prizes, awarded by popular vote through the web and the special prize “De ciencias y de letras”, which recognizes the involvement of teachers in the process and elaboration of the stories presented by their students.
In addition, the special prize for Artificial Intelligence has been awarded to seven stories focused on this topic. The latter has been possible thanks to the collaboration of the AIHUB-CSIC network.
The jury emphasized that all the stories “have addressed clearly and with great creativity the theme of artificial intelligence, many of them posing a rhythm and tension that trapped you”. In addition, they emphasize, “it is curious that many texts deal with how machines will dominate us and take our jobs. I think it reflects one of the fears that exist in society”.
Among the winners, the themes are very diverse. The misadventures of a molecule in a humorous way in “Sacadme de aquí” by Francisco José Plou Gasca is one of the winning stories (winner in the adult Spanish category); along with the detective story “El fósil de la sala 22”, by Silvia Tagarro Díaz (young Spanish); two futuristic visions in “La mecànica de la ment”, by María Ángela Ontenient Lledó (adult Catalan) and in “Dia 53 de 365”, by Sofía German (young Catalan). Also, the discovery of a vaccine against cancer in Afrikako Emakume Miresgarriak, by Ane Rioboó González (young Basque); the delicate portrait of the biology of life and death in “A ribeira do Mexillón”, by Pedro Rodríguez Villar (adult Galician); and a fiction about the possibility of talking to animals through electronic devices and its consequences, in the story “O derradeiro canto”, by Abril Viqueira Pose (young Galician). Below is a complete list of the winning stories by category.
