The Basque Government promotes 23 open innovation projects between startups and companies in the 10th edition of BIND

The projects will be presented during the BIND Demo Day, to be held on 2 July at the Bilbao Exhibition Centre.

The open innovation platform, BIND, kicks off its 10th edition with the participation of 21 startups from around the world, including PHOTOKRETE, the startup created from the MIRACLE project led by Jorge Sánchez Dolado at the CFM. This year, 23 technological projects will be developed in collaboration with 70 leading Basque companies, driven by the Basque Government and the SPRI Group. This public–private programme was launched in 2016 and has since supported more than 250 startups and promoted over 360 projects.

The selected startups will work with major companies in the Basque Country, including Repsol-Petronor, Betsaide, Elecnor, Ingeteam, GH Cranes, Maier, Orona, Tubacex, Valoriza, Keralty and Uvesco, among others. The solutions developed will be showcased on 2 July at the BIND Demo Day, the sector’s flagship event, which brings together more than 500 attendees each year, including companies, public bodies, investors and key players in innovation and entrepreneurship. It is a must-attend event to discover the latest technological trends and solutions applied in industry, as well as the startups and companies implementing them.

AI, IoT and Clean Tech: key technologies for Basque industry

Among the technologies featured in the projects launched in this 10th edition of BIND, Artificial Intelligence stands out, accounting for 40% of the projects selected by partner companies. This is followed by Clean Tech technologies, representing 21%, and IoT solutions, which account for 9% of the technologies chosen by participating Basque companies.

The projects, which will be developed throughout the first half of the year, have the following main objectives:

  • To digitalise, automate and increase the traceability of industrial processes.

  • To improve machinery maintenance.

  • To optimise logistics, value chains and resource circularity.

  • To strengthen digital health.

An internationally recognised initiative

The call for applications for this 10th edition of BIND received more than 882 startup proposals from 74 different countries. These applications presented solutions to the 12 use cases proposed by BIND partner companies, covering areas such as processes and operations, sustainability, customer and business development, and health.

Since its launch in 2016, the platform has grown to become an internationally recognised benchmark for open innovation. This year, of the 21 selected startups, seven are international, from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the United States and Mexico. Among the national startups, 10 are based in the Basque Country: seven from Gipuzkoa and three from Bizkaia. The remaining four come from Barcelona, Pontevedra, Santander and Seville.

Startups participating in this 10th edition will have access to a free acceleration programme, including mentoring, networking sessions within the Basque innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, and connections with investors.
