The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has announced the winners of the 3rd CSIC Awards for Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship, which recognize research activities that foster an entrepreneurial culture and raise the profile of scientific and technological achievements. In this year’s edition, the PHOTOKRETE project was one of the standout winners.

The application, led by CFM researcher Guido Goracci, was awarded a joint first prize in the general category of the Entrepreneurship track. The research team also includes Silvia Arrese-Igor and Jorge Sánchez Dolado.

In the general category of the Entrepreneurship track, the jury awarded the prize jointly to two initiatives. One of these is the PHOTOKRETE project, which aims to develop photonic mortars capable of lowering the temperature of surfaces and urban environments, thereby helping to mitigate the urban heat island effect and reduce energy consumption for air conditioning.

In addition, the Refoxy Pharma initiative, led by Wolfgang Link of the Sols-Morreale Institute for Biomedical Research (IIBM-CSIC-UAM), is developing innovative therapies based on the activation of the FOXO3 protein to treat age-related diseases, such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Innovation to Combat the Urban Heat Island Effect

The PHOTOKRETE project aims to develop photonic mortars capable of reducing the temperature of urban surfaces and environments. This technology helps lower energy consumption for air conditioning, offering an innovative solution to today’s energy efficiency challenges.

Background of the Awards

The Entrepreneurship category of these awards recognizes business ideas that have been evaluated by the CSIC’s Vice Presidency for Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship. Alongside PHOTOKRETE, the CSIC has also recognized other initiatives in various categories, ranging from CO₂ capture and visual perception to emergency management during cold air outbreaks and biomedical therapies. With these awards, the organization reinforces its commitment to the effective transfer of scientific and technological knowledge to society and its collaboration with the business community.
