Both ions, C+ and O+ , and the photo electron, , from each photo- ionization event are measured. The photon beam is coming out of the paper and its linear polarization is horizontal. The time and position of the two ion “hits” on the ion detector determine how the CO molecule was oriented at the time of electron emission. Computer analysis of the times and positions from many thousands of ionizations reveals the electron emission pattern for molecules with any chosen orientation.
