Javier Aizpurua

Basque Quantum (BasQ)

Javier Aizpurua is Scientific Director of Basque Quantum (BasQ), Ikerbasque Research Professor at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), and Distinguished Researcher at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).

He leads research in the theory of nanophotonics, focusing on the interaction between light and matter at the nanoscale, including optical nanoantennas, quantum plasmonics and quantum effects in light–matter interactions.

After completing his PhD in Physics at UPV/EHU, he carried out research at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden and at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States. He later established a theoretical nanophotonics research group in Donostia and has become an internationally recognised researcher in the field. He received the Euskadi Research Award in Science and Technology in 2022.
