Pride in STEM day – Looking inside to get outside

November 18th is the day selected to celebrate and highlight the work and barriers of LGBTQIA+ people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

In 2019 the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), CIC nanoGUNE and the Centro de Física de Materiales (CFM), present the initiative “Pride in Science/Harrotasuna Zientzian/Orgullo en ciencia” to join this celebration. Since 2019,  we have been celebrating this day with a unique event aimed at the general public (2019), at schools (2020) or to raise the profile of the collective’s staff in science (2021).

This year, we want to dedicate the day to our own community, and so we are organizing an informal coffee-working session with the aim of getting to know, and build an LGTBIQA+ community in the STEM environment of Donostia / San Sebastián.

LOOKING INSIDE TO GET OUTSIDE

We have invited all those LGTBQIA+ people and allies working in the STEM field in Donostia / San Sebastián to participate in this event, offering a safe space to exchange ideas, opinions, spectacles and experiences. More than 30 people have signed up!

The “work-café”-type session will be guided and energized by staff from our centers. Participants will work in groups on specific questions about the current situation of the LGBTIQA+ group in STEM, aspirations for the future and experiences that can help to address the issue in our environment.

The event will end with a sharing of all the contributions made in each working group and the drafting of a summary that will serve as a “state of the art”, “will for the future” and “concrete actions to be implemented” by the organization.

Pride in Science | Harrotasuna zientzian | Orgullo en Ciencia will draw up a brief report with these conclusions which will be shared with all participants so that they can pass it on to whomever they consider appropriate.

IMPORTANT: As our priority is to respect the privacy of those who wish to participate in the event, it will be held in a private space outside any of the centers during non-working hours.
