From May 24th to June 23rd, Donostia / San Sebastian hosts the FOTCIENCIA20 exhibition, organized by the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and the Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT) with the support of Fundación Occident and, on this occasion, also Leica Camera.

The exhibition, which comes to the city thanks to the collaboration of Kutxa Fundazioa and the Center for Materials Physics (CSIC-UPV/EHU), brings together 49 nano, micro and macroscopic photographs selected for their beauty, impact and ability to reflect scientific facts. The hatching of a gecko embryo, the symmetry of broccoli or a free radical captured by a tunneling microscope are some of the phenomena portrayed.

The images, taken by researchers from all areas of knowledge and photography enthusiasts, were chosen from among the more than 475 that were submitted to the latest edition of FOTCIENCIA, an initiative that celebrates its 20th anniversary bringing science closer to society through images and citizen participation.

All photographs are accompanied by a text in which the author explains the scientific interest of the image. To facilitate accessibility and inclusion, these texts can be listened to as audio guides by searching for ‘FOTCIENCIA20’ on the main audio platforms. In addition, for the first time, the exhibition incorporates a high-relief version of the ten award-winning images that, together with an additional audio description, allows visually impaired people to enjoy many of the details.

Meanwhile, family audiences eager to experiment with the optical instruments that make scientific photography possible can sign up for the ‘Scale your world‘ workshop, to be held on June 9. In it, the research staff of the CFM will encourage attendees to explore the environment with magnifying glasses and microscopes and even build a homemade microscope.
